3 things to avoid if you want social media fans!
Social media is a must do activity in today’s business world and it can be a great way of generating new business. But that isn’t it’s main aim and it shouldn’t be viewed independently of any other marketing activity taking place. Many companies get it very wrong, viewing social platforms as a way of broadcasting adverts for their products in the hope that someone will buy.
In this blog we look at 3 big no-no’s when it comes to social media success.
Don’t be controversial
People on social media like to follow and interact with others who are on a similar wavelength to them. They also like to use social media as platform to hold interesting debates.
If you remember when last year’s General Election took place, social media brimmed with users expressing their opinions.
When it comes to mixing business and social media, it is best to avoid posting any thing controversial and only stick to what your target market really appreciates and that is high quality content.
In most cases it’s not really the place of a business to have strong opinions on issues that could offend potential customers, you don’t want to turn people away because they don’t agree with your beliefs. You also don’t want to lose customers by appearing unprofessional.
Don’t you social media as an advertising platform
Many people see their social media as a medium to purely sell their product/service. Although this is the main objective for all businesses, it is not what your customers really want to see when they read their Facebook newsfeed.
What people like to see on their social media newsfeed is highly valuable content. This is a suggested practice in Gary Vaynerchuk’s book “Jab, Jab Jab, Right Hook”. Where the “Jab” is the high quality content and the “Right Hook” is the sell.
The aim is to establish trust with your target market through your content before you try to sell your product. The way to do that is to provide free advise and valuable information, be seen as helpful and knowledgeable in your field.
Don’t post too infrequently (or too frequently for that matter)
If you stop providing value to people then they will simply stop following you and look elsewhere instead, probably to one of your competitors! Likewise, if you post 100 times a day people will get overwhelmed and become uninterested. The amount you post varies depending on your business, industry and which social platform you are using.
