Social Media Mistakes

Common Social Media Marketing Mistakes

Social media has taken the world by storm, of course, you already know that. It is been nearly 10 years tens since we were first introduced to Facebook. And then along came other social media applications like Twitter, Youtube, Pinterest, Vines and Tumblr.

Social media has revolutionised the way we keep in touch with people and it is now part of our everyday lives. We use social media to share our thoughts on various matters, post our favourite photos from recent events and holidays and even share anything that we find interesting on the world wide web – usually hilarious cat videos. Basically it is a medium for people to express themselves

With the numbers on social media ever growing, this prompted many businesses to try and utilise social media to gain exposure for their business. And of course, to try and sell their product.

And so it is no surprise when we go on social media apps like Facebook, we come across various videos and adverts telling us to buy a product or service.

Not only does this deter many perspective customers, but you are blowing your chances of gaining some solid leads in the long term.

In his book, Jab Jab Jab Right Hook by Gary Vaynerchuk, he explains that in order to be successful in social media marketing you should not go straight for the sell (or what he means by saying “right hook”).

The right hook needs to come when you have successfully attained trust with your customer.

So how do you build trust with your customer?

Well you would need to give something to your customer first. You need to first acknowledge what your customer wants and then give it to them.

This is what Gary means by giving a load of “jabs” in the beginning. Even though his book is entitled Jab Jab Jab Right Hook. In reality, it is actually Jab x 50 then you can give the right hook.

Building trust via social media takes time. And the best way to do that is to provide excellent content that will add real value to your target audience.

You see, content marketing is now a major player when it comes social media marketing.

To give you an example of excellent content, this running shoe company produced a video on how to tie your running shoes so you can experience less blisters when you go running. You can see the video by visiting the link below:

The video above managed to get over 44 million views and helped put Illumiseen on the map. But did you noticed that the company never tried to sell their product. It just provided content that proved to be very useful for runners (their target market).

Towards the end of the video, they even encouraged their viewers to tune in for more videos.

A video like that turned out to be a huge hit on social media. It promoted the company without selling. It was an effective jab which gave them a huge following, and a massive gain in leads.
